This is not a immediate concern, but I do need to map out a plan this summer for next year. And this seems a great place to start thinking about it. Timmy and Billy were held back pretty far in their early years. Now Billy is doing well in school. Timmy is.... well, he is autistic. There are some hurdles we have not made it over. Anyway... they turn (cough, sputter) 16 this June. And they are entering 9th grade next year... Any ideas?
"HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION
An additional exemption to public school attendance as a result of changes in the compulsory attendance law in 1996 is high school graduation or fulfillment of all requirements for graduation. Therefore, even if a child is not yet 16 years old, that child may be exempt from the compulsory attendance requirement if graduation requirements have been met.
There are no graduation requirements established by state law for students in either a home school or a nonpublic school, so parents are free to establish reasonable requirements consistent with the course requirements for each of these options." - HSLDA Michigan
This is a great question and what a crazy law!
I wonder if the laws aren't due to a significant Amish population. Rumor has it they graduate early and on their own terms. But.... they also have an enclosed society where, I'm guessing, their requirements meet their needs for work and life.
