Why do we read stories we disagree with?

Some of our book choices this year will be by authors we disagree with or the storylines will not be in line with our world view. This weekend I was looking for a novel for my oldest daughter that matched with our worldviews...and I couldn't find one and that got me to thinking. Does the novel need to be about my daughter to be fit for my daughter? Some of the best discussions our family has had have been about books or movies that we 100% disagreed with the protagonist or the style or the depiction. We are able as parents to reinforce our world view and also see into the thoughts and beliefs of our children and how they are processing the world. Our children are given the opportunity however sheltered to view another world, another point of view. And they are invited to exercise those muscles that they will need to be in top form when they are finally ready to leave the nest.

4 Reasons To Read Books You Disagree With

Written from a Christian perspective this pastor captures a few core reasons that we should read stories that we don't agree with the conclusions or the character's actions.

Why You Should Read What You Hate

Written from a decidedly secular and liberal view this author captures the incredible feeling of reading a book that you 100% absolutely hate the views or the characters or the style. This forced reading is much like exercising when you hate it, you come away better for it, even if you still hate it.
